The University of Zagreb is the oldest Croatian university in continuous operation and one of the oldest in Europe, with a tradition spanning more than 350 years. Since its founding in 1669, it has developed into the leading academic and research institution in the Republic of Croatia, with more than 68,000 students and more than 8,000 teachers, researchers, and professional staff across 31 faculties and three art academies.
School of Dental Medicine - Teaching
Higher education in the field of dental medicine at the University of Zagreb has been provided for more than a hundred years, and the School of Dental Medicine, founded in 1962, today represents the central national institution for educating doctors of dental medicine.
The School conducts an integrated undergraduate and graduate university study programme in Croatian and English (360 ECTS), six specialist studies, and a doctoral programme in Croatian and English.
Teaching is carried out in accordance with the highest European and global standards, confirmed by international re-accreditations and the continuous interest of domestic and international students. Enrolment quotas are regularly filled to capacity, and the integrated studies rank among the most sought-after in Croatia. More than 1,100 students are currently enrolled across all levels of higher education.
School of Dental Medicine - Departments and Chairs
The School operates through nine departments and thirty chairs covering all fundamental and clinical medical and dental fields. The teaching staff comprises more than 260 highly educated employees, including more than 130 PhDs, who shape new generations of doctors of dental medicine through their professional and pedagogical work. Some faculty members also participate in education at other universities in Croatia, the region, and Europe. The School's teaching bases are University Hospital Centre Sestre Milosrdnice, University Hospital Centre Zagreb, University Hospital Dubrava, and the Dr. Fran Mihaljević University Hospital for Infectious Diseases.
School of Dental Medicine - Scientific and Research Activity
Scientific and research excellence is one of the School's core values. As the most productive scientific institution in the field of dental medicine in Croatia, the School develops research in contemporary and interdisciplinary areas — from salivary diagnostics and advanced dental materials to the application of artificial intelligence in dentistry. Foreign researchers also work in the School's laboratories, and numerous faculty members are recipients of national and international awards. For 60 years, the School has been publishing the international scientific journal Acta Stomatologica Croatica, which publishes papers in Croatian and English and is indexed in the world's most important indexing databases.
Professional activity is carried out through specialist studies and lifelong learning programmes with numerous domestic and international courses. Of particular note is the International Congress of the School of Dental Medicine, which brings together leading experts and enables the rapid transfer of scientific findings into the educational process and clinical practice, in line with the School's mission to improve the oral health of the community.
